铺路石的主要受益者是从农村迁移至城市教育受到不良影响的儿童：一些孩子虽随父母移居到城市，但因户口问题无法进入普通公立学校， 只能在教育水平落后于公立学校的随迁子女学校就读； 还有一些孩子即使在公立学校就读， 他们还是需要额外的功课辅导，这却是他们父母不能提供的。
可以说，我们受益人中处于最不利地位的是那些无法与父母一起去城市，在寄宿学校或与其他家庭成员一起在农村生活的留守儿童。农村小学的教育水平远远落后于城市学校；同时，这些留守儿童也缺乏家长的监护与培养。
